OTTAWA, Ontario, June 15, 2011 – The Honourable Christian Paradis, PC, MP for Mégantic—L’Érable, Minister of Industry and Minister of State (Agriculture), is angry and dismayed with the NDP’s position on chrysotile asbestos.
"We saw every NDP member proudly calling for a ban on the banning of chrysotile asbestos. Yesterday, following a question in the House of Commons, a dark day for the industry, they had the gall to give a standing ovation,” stated Mr. Paradis.
"It’s terrible to try to throw out the policy on safe use of chrysotile asbestos that was developed by our communities of Thetford Mines and Asbestos at great expense over generations,” Mr. Paradis went on to say.
The MP pointed out that for over 30 years, the Government of Canada has been promoting the safe and controlled use of chrysotile asbestos in Canada and around the world. According to recent scientific studies, chrysotile can be used safely in a controlled environment. That is the position Prime Minister Stephen reiterated during the last election campaign.
"Only the Conservatives have the interests of our regions at hearts,” Mr. Paradis added in closing.
