Riding Profile

Located on the South Shore of the St. Lawrence River, the riding of Mégantic—L’Érable extends from L’Érable region in the north through L’Amiante region in the centre and Granit region in the south to the American border. Population centres in the riding include Thetford Mines, Plessisville and Lac-Mégantic in the regional county municipalities of L’Amiante, L’Érable and Granit, respectively. The total population of Mégantic—L’Érable is 87,078.

Sectors such as plastics processing, composites, metallurgy, agriculture and timber transportation play a significant role in the regional economy. Emerging economic sectors, such as industrial oleochemistry, also contribute to the economic diversity of the riding. Manufacturing and retail trade are major sources of employment.

According to Statistics Canada census data for 2001, the average family income is $48,425. The unemployment rate is 7.1%.

In 1867, the riding was called Mégantic, becoming Mégantic—Frontenac in 1933. The name was changed back to Mégantic in 1947 and then became Frontenac in 1966. It retained that name for 30 years, became Frontenac—Mégantic in 1996 and then Mégantic—L’Érable in 2003.
