Statement By The Prime Minister Of Canada
April 20, 2010
Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement today to mark Yom Ha’atzmaut (Israel Independence Day) celebrations: “Today we celebrate the 62nd anniversary of Israel’s independence, and I am honoured to extend warm greetings to all Canadians celebrating Yom Ha’atzmaut. “The creation of the State of Israel is a testament to the triumph of faith and perseverance over tragedy and adversity. Israel is an enduring symbol for the world and a source of great inspiration. The courage, resilience and determination that built this formidable, democratic nation continue to hearten Jewish communities around the globe. “This proud celebration affords us the opportunity to reflect on the events that forged Israel’s history, as well as the shared history and values between our two great nations. We count ourselves among Israel’s closest friends and allies. Since its founding in 1948, Canada has supported Israel and its right to live in peace and security with its neighbours. We remain strong and steadfast friends. “On behalf of the Government of Canada, please accept my best wishes for a memorable celebration and a prosperous and peaceful year ahead.” |
